چکیده

In this paper we present an Embodied Conversational Agent (ECA) model able to display rich verbal and non-verbal behaviors. The selection of these behaviors should depend not only on factors related to her individuality such as her culture, her social and professional role, her personality, but also on a set of contextual variables (such as her interlocutor, the social conversation setting), and other dynamic variables (belief, goal, emotion). We describe the representation scheme and the computational model of behavior expressivity of the Expressive Agent System that we have developed. We explain how the multi-level annotation of a corpus of emotionally rich TV video interviews can provide context-dependent knowledge as input for the specification of the ECA (e.g. which contextual cues and levels of representation are required for enabling the proper recognition of the emotions).

Non - verbal behaviors expressivity and their representation

Embodied Conversational Agents (ECAs) are a powerful user interface paradigm, aiming to transfer the inherent richness of human-human interaction to human-computer interaction. ECAs are virtual embodied representations of humans that communicate multimodally with the user (or other agents) through voice, facial expression, gaze, gesture, and body movement. Effectiveness of an agent is dependent...

Computers that Smile: Humor in the Interface

Introduction It is certainly not the case that wen we consider research on the role of human characteristics in the user interface of computers that no attention has been paid to the role of humor. However, when we compare efforts in this area with efforts and experiments that attempt to demonstrate the positive role of general emotion modelling in the user interface, then we must conclude that...

Issues in Multimodal Nonverbal Communication and Emotion in Embodied (Conversational) Agents

Virtual worlds are getting inhabited by virtual humans. Sometimes they act as (autonomous) embodied conversational agents; sometimes they represent human visitors and reflect (real-time) actions performed by the human visitors or users of the environment. It is not always necessary to represent a full body or any body at all. However, there are also many applications where it can be useful to h...

Multimodal Expressive Embodied Conversational Agents [Multimodal expressive ECAs]

In this paper we present our work toward the creation of a multimodal expressive Embodied Conversational Agent (ECA). Our agent, called Greta, exhibits nonverbal behaviors synchronized with speech. We are using the taxonomy of communicative functions developed by Isabella Poggi [22] to specify the behavior of the agent. Based on this taxonomy a representation language, Affective Presentation Ma...
